Wimbledon Introduces Video Review Technology in 2025.

The Championships tennis court with video review system

Wimbledon will follow the US and Australian Opens in implementing video review systems.

Video review systems are set to arrive at The Championships in the upcoming tournament.

Competitors will gain the ability to question particular calls from the official, mirroring the system currently in operation at each of the American Grand Slam and the Australian Open.

This technology will be accessible on the main stadium and the number one court for the duration of the Championships and on the other four featured courts when they are hosting singles contests.

This step comes just a year after the All England Club rolled out ELC, which terminated the 147-year role of line judges.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Players will not be permitted to dispute the accuracy of the ELC system, but they can ask for the umpire to re-examine specific situations, including:

  • Whether a tennis ball has double-bounced.
  • If a ball made contact with an opponent's racquet or body during play.
  • Potential interference at the conclusion of a point.

Importantly, there will be an unlimited number on the amount of challenges a competitor can request.

Case in Point

A recent example took place in a recent tournament recently, where a top player used the review system against his opponent.

The British player conceded it was a tough call for the umpire, but believed his rival had "used the regulations quite well."

The umpire viewed a video and determined the player was responsible for hindrance, awarding the rally to Medvedev.

Growing Trend

This technology are not exclusive to Grand Slams. The system was adopted at the US Open for two years and the Aussie Open this year.

Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the ATP circuit plans to have the system implemented at all of its tournaments.

Other Changes

A further innovation at The Championships 2025 involves the addition of visual indicators on scoreboards to support the verbal announcements from the ELC system.

This addresses instances where spectators have occasionally been uncertain whether a ball was in or out.

Finally, with precisely a century of days to go until the beginning of the tournament, organizers have also revealed an increase in daily attendance at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
