RAF Typhoon fighter aircraft have joined forces with French aircraft in a combined operation targeting an underground arms cache in Syria employed by the Daesh militant organization, as stated by the British defence ministry.

The facility, identified by surveillance, was assessed as containing munitions and bombs, the statement said, and was situated in mountainous terrain just to the north of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"The RAF jets used precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to hit a number of access tunnels providing entry to the depot... early reports suggest the strike was effective," the MoD said.

There was no evidence of any civilian casualties in the operation late on Saturday and all the aircraft returned safely, the ministry further stated.

The Typhoon fighters were supported by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

IS - also known as the so-called Islamic State - enforced militant control over significant areas in Iraq and Syria until 2019.

"This action shows our UK leadership, and determination to operate in unison with our partners, to eradicate any re-emergence of IS and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the Middle East," UK Defence Secretary the minister remarked.

RAF aircraft have carried out overwatch operations over Syrian airspace to "forestall any attempted comeback" of IS subsequent to its routing at the Baghuz confrontation in the year 2019, the ministry said.

"I want to thank every member of our armed forces who took part in this strike for their skill and their bravery," he added. "Including them were a great many UK service members on duty over Christmas and New Year. This operation, to remove terrorist threats who endanger our safety, shows how UK forces are prepared to act, continuously, keeping Britain secure within its borders and powerful internationally."

During December, the American forces carried out what it called a "large-scale strike" targeting IS targets in Syria, subsequent to an assault resulted in the deaths of two US servicemembers and a civilian interpreter in Palmyra.

The United Nations estimates Islamic State still boasts an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 combatants in Syria and Iraq.
