Fed Lowers Interest Rates for Second Instance This Calendar Year Amid Financial Instability

The US monetary authority lowered borrowing costs on Wednesday, representing the second reduction this year during financial volatility originating from the government closure and trade duties.

Decision Comes at Extraordinary Moment for Federal Reserve

The move to reduce the key rate by a quarter point to a range of 4% to 3.75% comes at an unprecedented juncture for the Fed. The authority has been under immense pressure to lower borrowing costs even with ongoing price increases.

Fed Statement Highlights Job Market Changes

In a statement, the Fed stated that the jobless rate had gone up but remains low. “Job gains have slowed,” the release notes. “Price increases has moved up and remains moderately high.”

Federal Closure Complicates Fed’s Job

The ongoing federal government shutdown, now among the lengthiest in US history, has also hindered the central bank’s task. Gathering of important economic data has been indefinitely halted as employees at the BLS are on leave during the shutdown.

Information Shortage Impacts Policy Decisions

The Fed typically analyzes labor statistics to determine labor market conditions, including the number of employment gains added to the market and the current jobless percentage. The last jobs report was published in early September, prior to the shutdown, and gave a relatively bleak snapshot of the jobs market in the previous month.

The number of positions added to the market in August was lower by more than 100,000 since the earlier season, and unemployment rose to four point three percent – the peak since three years ago.

Private Data Indicate Continued Decline

Though BLS was set to publish September’s employment data in early October, it suspended its publication when the closure started. Private payroll firm ADP indicated recently that the private sector cut 32,000 jobs in September, a indication that the employment landscape is continuing to slow.

“Both the supply and demand for workers has fallen significantly,” central bank head Jerome Powell said recently, which he had previously said comes from immigration and tariff policies.

Price Data Shows Moderate Rise

Though the bureau’s employment data has been suspended, the bureau still issued its inflation report for September that showed that prices are going up, although gradually. Prices rose 3% over the past twelve months, the peak since January. In April, the annual inflation rate was two point three percent, the minimum it has been since three years ago. The Fed’s target inflation rate is 2%.
